  12. I love fashion. That’s actually the understatement of the century. Once upon a time, I was prepared to dedicate my entire life to it. I was accepted to, and had every intention of attending, Ryerson’s fashion design program in 2000 with plans of going to Central Saint Martin’s, RCA, Antwerp, or Bunka to do a Masters once I graduated. Dreams. None of that ever materialized for reasons too numerous (read: boring haha) to mention. The passion lives on though you’ll just never catch me speaking about it ‘cause like, who fucking cares. However, if you do care feel free to spark up a conversation about it we can definitely get it in.

An old friend of mine, Calla Haynes, helped me assemble the design component of my portfolio that helped me get into the program. She had been attending Ryerson for a year but, after recognizing her talent, was encouraged to transfer to Parsons (Paris, by way of New York) in her second year. She went on to do prints (I think?) with Olivier Theyskens for Nina Ricci and Rochas. Not bad, hey? She’s gone on to start her own line called “Calla”. A fitting name: Clean. Fresh. Delicate. Elegant. Confident. Sure. Just like her.

She also has exceptional taste in music. I remember sitting on be bedroom floor cutting the patterns for my portfolio listening to Joel Plaskett albums, back to back. His music was unlike anything that I’d heard before and I loved it. It served as an introduction to a whole new realm of music that is very much a part of who I am today.

Opening Ceremony posted the music from Calla’s FW12 collection presentation as a part of their “Showtunes” series a few weeks ago; It takes me right back to that very day on Calla’s floor. I like it alot and I think you will too.
